I’ve spent my career bringing stories to life through various mediums, predominant in film and television. In my role at Ubisoft, I had the opportunity to dip my toes into the world of video games, and explore how stories can be told through immersive gameplay and adapted into Film & TV projects. My history working in both film/tv and games was an inspiration for my approach to the redesign of Lone Wolf & Cub.

Fan artwork created by Raphael Ribeiro

Previous game combat was unnecessarily complex and layered, but featured a unique layout of the combat card decks and the idea of matching an attack was fun. I wanted to heighten that and let you fell like a master fighter, balancing the randomness with some player agency and potential for weapon upgrades.

The Mandalorian has numerous weapons and surprise gadgets. When an enemy makes a move, you must choose a weapon to return fire by playing one of the weapons from your hand.

There are skilled opponents who will attack with both an initial and follow up move, requiring the mandalorian use multiple weapons to defend!

I contemplated and tested a few forms of combat before settling on the skilled opponent who attacks with follow up moves. The game needs a stronger secondary opponent for the bigger story fights, and this also enabled me to reduce the complexity of the non-skilled opponents (to preserve player life points and allow them to make progress in the game), while increasing the difficulty of the skilled opponents.

Redesigned Character Sheet - All the information you need to keep track of cleanly fits onto a single page and can be easily referenced at a glance without flipping to either the rule book or the story chapters book.

The following videos show a few sample turns. See how exploration, combat, and story events can be triggered through the game.
